2 Julie Fuller Trophy giant-killers

League News

Veterans 6-Man League

You can usually rely on the Veteran's 6-Man Julie Fuller Trophy to throw a few surprise results and, despite the tinkering with the format, this year is no exception. Two giant-killing performances which in previous years would have eliminated their opponents from the competition but this time around just impacts on their new league table position.

Pride of place going to Slaithwaite from Section 3 who didn't need their +18 handicap to demolish Section A team Lindley Lib, winners of this title in 2018, by 83-16. Three single-figure wins propelled the winners to the top of the Week 1 League Table and in prime position to progress to the semi-final stage. Before then there are another 3 rounds of fixtures to be staged with the top four teams then making the semi-finals.

The other giant-killing act came from Section 3 side Holmfirth 'B' who needed all their 18 handicap start to beat Section 1 side and twice the winners of this trophy, Netherton Con, by 59-57. Again the losers live to fight another day with 3 more opportunities to address the situation.

The other Holmfirth team from Section C also had a good result when beating Section A side Oakfield 55-52 but that isn't a good enough aggregate to put them into the top half of the table after the first round of fixtures. All the other scratch teams won their matches but it is aggregate totals over 4 rounds of fixtures that count this year and some of those match wins were achieved with low aggregate scores to leave the Week 1 League Table looking like this.

At present there is no provision in the competition rules on how to separate teams that are on equal points. So if the table below was replicated at the end of the four rounds of the competition how would the four teams to be included in the semi-finals be determined? Then goodness knows how things would be managed if one team fails to field a team one week leaving one team playing less matches than the rest so they would have no chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. Winging it! Making up the rules as we go along!
