Winter League
There were the nice round number of 8 entries for the Division 1 Qualifying Round of the new Pairs KO competition which was staged at Thorpe Green on Friday. The weather was variable but mainly dry and the Thorpe Green soup sold out again.
Matches were once again based on 21-Up or 15 ends whichever comes first. We had the second drawn match (14-14) after 15 ends of the competition requiring a sudden death end won by the Kirkheaton Con pair of Garry Senior and Tony Butterfield. The pair went on to become one of the last two pairs alongside the Thorpe Green homesters of David Frost and Martin Skuze. Both pairs progress through to the Round of the Last 16 to be played on Valentines Day next February.
The Chairman was especially pleased to see that Thorpe Green had found a new source for the much revered Bovril cups. I am not sure where he acquired the taste but I am pleased he did and for the pressure he applied to Thorpe Green personnel to add it to the menu. Bovril has always had a totally effective hold on my body temperature from the time as a six-year-old when I stood alongside my dad on the terraces at the Old Show Ground, the old home of Scunthorpe United F.C. The tea shed served hot Bovril at home games except on the (not many) warmer days when they served hot Vimto instead, never the choice of both on the same day (don't ask)!
