Memories: July 2002
The year was 2002 when Brazil beat Germany in the World Cup Final in South Korea, the Queen Mother died, Sanyo added the first ever camera into a mobile phone and Waterloo bowler Roy Sutton won the BCGBA Veterans Championship at Rhyl BC.
The prestigious Jack & Jean Isherwood Trophy came along with the title which Roy claimed was his first-ever competition win. That started a good winning sequence as in the same season Roy went on to win the Veterans League Pairs KO competition with Golcar Lib teammate Frank Greenwood, a feat the duo were to repeat in 2005.
Going on to win the Over-70s KO in 2008 when back at Waterloo before moving on to play at Meltham for many years forming a formidable partnership with Barry Gibson reaching the later stages of a number of Veterans League competitions without adding to his total. Roy now bowls for Slaithwaite in the Veterans League. The full story of Roy's big day is captured in this published article along with all the scores from Finals Day.
