24 Leeds parks under threat of closure

Bowling News

It is not only Kirklees area bowling clubs that are under threat from Council cutbacks as once again Leeds City Council are looking to make savings on parks maintenance and bowling greens are seen as an easy target. They say that the demand for bowling has dropped 39% in the last 10 years and with 61 bowling greens in 47 parks that demand is over-provided for.

This Facebook posting from Josh Mordue outlines the problem, its impact and what they would like to do about it and how you can help.

Many of you will have possibly seen this from Leeds City Council, they are proposing to close a huge number of bowling greens ahead of the 2025 bowling season due to council cutbacks! It would absolutely destroy local leagues in Leeds and surrounding areas and be a huge blow for our sport of Crown Green Bowls.

They are looking to close 24 greens down!

Please take the time to fill in this questionnaire from Leeds City Council, it takes 5-10 mins. No matter where you’re from please just fill it out and let’s hopefully help the clubs in need.

British Crown Green Bowling Association (Official), Yorkshire CGBA & Yorkshire CPBA, let’s hope that you get in touch with Leeds City Council and help to resolve this issue.

Leeds is huge city and apparently has the most amount of public park bowling greens for a city in the UK, with 47 which impacts on 62 bowling clubs. They are looking to close 24 of these greens. The greens in question closing will decimate the many bowling associations such as Leeds ABA CGBA, Barkston Ash ABA, Airedale & Wharfedale CGBA leagues as well as many of the clubs that affiliated to others league such as the West Riding & Spen Valley BA, Bradford CGBA, Mirfield League as well as the county associations.

Please take the time to fill out the survey! Leeds City Council & Leeds Parks and Countryside Service Service should be looking to help clubs promote the facilities they have and increase membership and as a consequence gain them more money to spend through memberships.

The closure of these clubs, that are social hubs for many people will be lost forever and become an eyesore in public parks and there will be a loss of history. These clubs are a place for people to socialise and also help people remain active. A sport played by all, accessible to people of any age, sex, and ethnicity it will be a huge blow for bowlers in the City of Leeds and surrounding areas as well as bowlers in general!

Please share this and get as many to complete the survey to help the clubs.

Below are the 24 greens proposed to close. If LCC are successful with this they will probably no doubt carry on and look to close others too.

Here is a list of the 23 greens that are earmarked to avoid closure under the cost-cutting exercise.
