Winter League
A preview of a week's bowling at Netherton Cons
It is the final week of Winter bowling this week at Netherton Cons with three days of competitive action to end the Division 5 season. There are League fixtures on Tuesday and Thursday finishing off with the Friday staging of the Qualifying Round of the Winter Cup. Lets just concentrate on the League situation in this posting.
Slaithwaite need one win from their final two fixtures to be sure of clinching the Division 5 title. The first of those is on Tuesday against their nearest rivals, Brockholes B. A draw in this match would have the same outcome as a win at any other time. The backup situation being a final day encounter with bottom-of-the-table Netherton Con B. Brockholes B are really the only team that can pinch the title from them so Tuesday's meeting is of special significance for both teams.
However the Brockholes team will be equally focused on the two teams behind them as Springwood C and Jackson Bridge can still pip them to the second promotion place. Jackson Bridge having the easier (on paper) run-in to end the season but they are 4-points off the pace at present. It is going to be a tight one whichever way it goes.
Netherton Cons B have won their last two matches but with games against Slaithwaite and Outlane to come they have probably left things too late to benefit from their best form of the season. Mirfield A just need two points from their final two fixtures to finish outside the relegation places but even that may not be sufficient to save their status should the reorganisation towards divisions of eight teams go ahead. That is the likely scenario especially if the total number of teams in the League for next season is divisable by 8 then it looks nailed on for a shake-up of the divisions.
