A busy week in the Winter League

Winter League

A busy week coming up in the Winter League as three more divisions begin their seasons at Primrose Hill Lib on Monday, Netherton Con on Thursday and a first-ever round of Winter League fixtures being staged at our new host club, Lockwood Con on Tuesday.

Lockwood Con are excited to be even more involved after having at least one team in the League for the last two years. A new access gate has been identified which leads to improved car parking facilities as previously posted on this website. With 6 new teams involved for the first time it is likely to take a couple of weeks before things setlle down as bowlers become familiar with the pre-match routines.

There are always some basics that new teams need to know ...

  • Collect £3 from each of your team members and pass to the host club. This covers green fees and provides each bowler with a raffle ticket, a hot drink and biscuits

  • All matches start at 11am but if both teams are ready earlier get on with it.

  • The 'home' (first named) team on the fixture list has the jack for all three legs of the match

  • The 'home team' decides the running order of the two singles and pairs games

  • All teams should come prepared to measure ends as required. It is winter, it can be cold, don't leave bowlers standing around waiting for a measure. Be prepared to measure any end, not just your team's games.

Primrose Hill Lib begin their second season of hosting fixtures and built a reputation last season for providing a wide range of hot and cold food options which were reasonably priced and most welcome. On the green they are hosting Division 4 matches this season which includes the 2023-24 Champions of Divisions 5 and 6. They being respectively Slaithwaite and the runaway Division 6 winners from Linthwaite Hall. Now they have become Linthwaite Hall A after building a B team who start life in Division 8 on Tuesday.

Netherton Con have been busy over the summer adding some finishing touches to their surroundings which will provide a lot of additional covered seating for bowlers which is always welcome as it has been known to rain on Thursdays in Netherton. The work in progress is shown in this recent photograph from Geoff Dyson.

In addition there are Week 2 fixtures at Springwood (on Wednesday) and the Rugby Club (Thursday) as we ramp up the volume in expectation of another great week of winter bowling. That all brings 5 of the 8 divisions online with the other three divisions queueing up behind them after completion of extended maintenance work on the greens at Milnsbridge, Cowcliffe and Lindley Lib.
