A tribute to Norma

Norma was a fantastic ambassador of bowling. She had an abundance of enthusiasm, generosity, determination, humour and kindness, and all of these attributes were used to support and promote bowling at all levels, all ages, and across genders.

Norma along with her beloved husband Harry who died a few years ago were familiar figures on the bowling scene. In particular, Norma was involved with the junior league helping to shape and develop their talents and officiating at many of their events. In addition, Norma donated generously to the junior league so ensuring that the best possible grounding could be secured to facilitate the future. I know that her endeavors and a firm hand on occasions have had a lasting impact and that former juniors remember her fondly.

Norma was also Treasurer for the Huddersfield Ladies Works League for over 10 years. Treasurer was the official title but Norma did so much more for this league. She was the keeper of the faith, always having an optimistic viewpoint even in the darkest days of the Covid 19 pandemic. Norma also enjoyed writing about bowling, contributing several unique and interesting articles to HuddWeb.

The last occasion that I was privileged to be with Norma was at the recent pairs competition. When Norma was unexpectedly absent at the start, we were in disarray without her. When she did arrive she said that she had made a decision between calling an ambulance or coming to the bowling. "Which would do me most good?" she recalled and the answer was "definitely bowling", so she came along and enjoyed the day!

Norma was a member of Meltham BC, Golcar C & B, and Thorpe Green. It was at Thorpe Green that she had at least a weekly job of making teas for the veteran's men's teams. How I used to tease her about "mollycoddling those men", to which she would just chuckle, it was a role that she obviously thoroughly enjoyed. Thoroughly enjoyed, perhaps sums up Norma's association with bowling, she loved everything about it, so on behalf of all those that you have helped along the way, a big thank you.

Sleep tight Norma and may your kind and generous spirit live on.
