Memories
Father Christmas was very good to me this year. Among the aftershave I will never use, the socks I will never wear and the chocolates which have already added to my waistline I received a gem of a gift. It is a year's subscription to the British Newspaper Archives. This provides access to copies of lots of newspapers (including all the nationals and locals such as the Huddersfield Examiner) going back to the 1700's and boasting of 88,045,418 pages of history with a search engine that makes it easy to delve deep into the printed history of almost anything or anybody.
So on days like this and still snowbound and have not left the house for a week now I take solace in testing out the system. Crown green bowling seems to feature prominently in the printed sports pages for many years and I include an extract from the sports pages of the Huddersfield Examiner from September 1946 which reported on the summer season enjoyed by Almondbury Cons which included their success in lifting the Henry Taylor Cup.
The article goes on to look at other results around that time including the achievements of Cowcliffe bowler and pub landlord Tedbar Tinker, a professional bowler playing matches of 41-Up as well as winning the 1944 Waterloo but more on Tedbar coming later. A fascinating insight into our sport from 80 years ago. Enjoy my Christmas present.
