Bowling News
Once again I am very grateful to Dave Parkin for providing this monthly update to the list of qualifiers for the end of season BCGBA Champion-of-Champions competition.
We now know 24/32 qualifiers so 8 more places up for grabs. However, the BCGBA still have to issue invitations that have to be accepted so the reserve list may still go deep. There’s also now a greater chance of a qualifier winning the remaining events.
GREG SMITH’s 2nd SENIOR INDIVIDUAL MERIT win on Saturday 27th July at PENNFIELDS BC in WOLVERHAMPTON following up his COUNTY MERIT win triggered the reserve list & two qualifiers are known.
GREG’s win has been covered extensively so we move on to PAUL DUDLEY who’s win in the FEDERATION MERIT on the 21st July at the TETLEYS CLUB in WARRINGTON qualifier hm for OWLEY WOOD. PAUL is no stranger to the CHAMPION of CHAMPIONS having been at the last 2 events and he came thru a field of 61 and he beat NATHAN DOBSON 21-12 in the final.
A quality field assembled the day after the SENIOR MERIT at the RICHMOND CLASSIC at RICHMOND BC in LIVERPOOL and after some great bowling which saw already qualified CALLUM WRAIGHT overcome GREG SMITH 21-20 in the semi-final, Welshman, LEIGHTON ROBERTS triumphed 21-19 in the final. He had beaten JOSH MORDUE (8th reserve) in the other semi.
LEIGHTON’s win was not the news that 1st reserve, DARREN EDMONDSON wanted as he took that accolade by defeating the reigning FLEETWOOD FESTIVAL champion, PAUL DUDLEY in the final the day before the SENIOR MERIT. DARREN will be hoping someone refuses an invitation or double qualifies in the remaining 8 events.
The first qualifier of the month was COLIN CHAPMAN of GREATER MANCHESTER who won the JACK & JEAN ISHERWOOD Vets Handicap at PREES in SHROPSHIRE. He defeated GARETH M WILLIAMS 21-16 in the final.
On Saturday July 20th at CASTLE SPORTS in NORTHWICH, two time SENIOR MERIT winner, MATT GILMORE took the current 5th reserve spot in the field by defeating MATTY WORDEN 21-18 in the CASTLE PRIVATE CLASSIC final.
The final qualifier of the month was YORKSHIRE’s JOSH BROWN who came through a quality field at the SANDAL CLASSIC at SANDAL BC in WAKEFIELD on the 14th July.
JOSH beat MATTY WORDEN in the final 21-12. On a personal note, so pleased for JOSH as our grandads were next door neighbours and we both learnt to bowl on the lovely green at FARNLEY TYAS BC near HUDDERSFIELD.
