Biggest shock result of Division 1 season

Veterans League

Review of the results of matches played in Divisions 1 & 2 on Tuesday 30 July

The biggest shock result of the Division 1 season happened this week when bottom of the table Netherton Con A recorded only their second win of 2024 when toppling runaway leaders Lowerhouses by 7-2. That was Lowerhouses's first defeat since the opening day of the season and reduced their lead at the top single figures.

So well done to the Netherton Con team for such a display which restricted the visiting Lowerhouses team to their lowest aggregate score of the season, just 100 points. Neither of the teams' positions changed as a result of this match but the full repercussions of this result may be seen in the future at both ends of the table.

Marsh United A failed to cash in on the Lowerhouses under-performance when going down 4-5 at Lockwood Con leaving Longwood as the only top five team to win this week when they won 7-2 away at Lindley BC A. Waterloo and Cowcliffe both lost their away fixtures by the same 2-7 scorelines at Golcar Lib and Kirkheaton Con A respectively.

A 126-125 aggregate total score enabled Clayton West to claim a 5-4 home win over Rastrick in the day's other top division fixture.

Big wins for the major Division 2 promotion contenders included a whitewash 9-0 home win for Meltham A over Shepley and saw their lead at the top extended to an impressive 21 points. The division's match of the day saw the 3rd and 4th placed teams going up against each other with Elland C&BC coming out as emphatic winners when seeing off Thongsbridge A with an 8-1 scoreline, That resulted in a move into 2nd place for the winners and a two place drop for the Thongsbridge team as Lindley Lib A and Milnsbridge A both passed them with good home wins. The Lindley Lib A team beat Almondbury BC A by 7-2 and Milnsbridge A recorded another 8-1 win over Golcar Lib B.

The bottom-two clash went the way of Broad Oak A who had a 6-3 away win at Almondbury Lib as both teams remain in the relegation places. An important 7-2 home win for New Mill A over Linthwaite Hall keeps matters very tight at the foot of the table as the four teams above the relegation places, now excludes the New Mill team, are now only separated by four points so all will continue to feature in any relegation talk for the present.
