Clayton West beaten for first time in 17 matches

Veterans League

Review of the Veterans 6-Man League fixtures played on Monday 29 July

Clayton West lost their first Division 2 match of the season when going down 2-5 away at Lindley Lib B who had 92-years-old Arthur Tracey among their singles winners. A close 86-90 aggregate loss was no consolation to the leaders who had claimed 16 consecutive wins and now find themselves only 5 points ahead of Marsh Lib A despite that unblemished run of results.

Marsh Lib moved into the 2nd promotion place after beating the previous place-holders Bradley & Colne by an emphatic 6-1 scoreline. It gets worse for the Bradley & Colne side as Holmfirth A and New Mill closed in on them with big away wins. The Holmfirth A team winning 6-1 away at Greenhead Park A and New Mill overtaking Golcar Lib by beating them 5-2 on their own turf.

Milnsbridge B ended a run of 8 straight defeats with an important 6-1 home win over fellow strugglers Linthwaite Hall to pass their opponents and move up two places to 11th position. They also passed Hemplow on the way who crashed out 1-6 away at Longwood and now sit in the 2nd relegation place.

Almondbury Lib provided some respite from relegation worries by beating bottom team Elland C&BC 4-3 although they remain in the group of 5 teams separated by 6 points just above the seemingly doomed Elland team.

It was a good day for the Division 1 leaders Marsh United A as they matched the best result that the chasing pack could muster between them despite being the only top four team with an away fixture last Monday. A 5-2 away win at Golcar C&BC maintained their 3 points lead over Shepley A who had the same scoreline when overcoming Thongsbridge A and only collecting the two points for the best aggregate total by the narrow 88-86 lead.

Waterloo's title hopes took a setback as they were held to a narrow 4-3 home win over lowly Crosland Moor where the aggregate totals were the same at 78-78. That lifted the Crosland Moor team further away from the drop zone as the bottom two both lost their away matches. Lockwood Con going down 1-6 at Slaithwaite and Paddock I&C missing out 2-5 at Brockholes A who move out of range of the relegation threatened teams.

Skel Windmill A had a good 6-1 home win over Milnsbridge BC A and Netherton Con had a first win in 5 with a whitewash 7-0 victory over Lindley Lib A to move up a place to fifth position but well out of the title race being 15-points off the pace.

Denby Dale hold second place in the Divison 3 table and were without a match this week but will have been alerted to an improvement in their title chances after the leaders, Brockholes B, lost 2-5 away at Thongsbridge B who move up a place to third as Marsh Lib B scored a key 5-2 away win at Holmfirth B to go level on points with them.

The Denby side are still 12 points behind the leaders but have an 8-points cushion over third placed Thongsbridge B. Things get a little crowded then with two points from 3rd to 5th places. Marsh United B had a good first win in four when seeing off Skel Windmill B and moving out of the bottom two as a result. Primrose Hill Lib avenged an eary season defeat at bottom team Shepley B with a 5-2 home win with two matches to be played in this division on Friday.
