Memories
We asked you to name these Cowcliffe bowlers, the competition they had won and the year. All the answers are below.
Bob Swan takes up the story ....
This is the Cowcliffe Veterans 10-Man League team that won the William Cuerdian Cup as the 2002 Division 4 Champions. The team had only formed the previous year as the Rastrick 'B' team but were displaced when the second green gave way to become a car park and left the team homeless. We moved to Cowcliffe for the 2002 season where we enjoyed title success.
The 2002 team photograph, (taken by Steve Stoney ) is:
Rear row: Les Owen, David Bentley, Ralph Simpson, Philip Riding, John Peckover & Ronnie Sutcliffe.
Front row: Bob Swan, Jeff Jones, Peter Slacke & Frank Sykes.
Missing from the group was Stanley Broadbent, the other regular member of the team.
Apart from me the only surviving bowlers are Ralph, Jeff & Frank.
The last I heard about Frank he was in a home.
Stanley played his last game with us in 2013
He turned up at the Windmill looking really poorly so I took his place in the team.
It turned out he had survived a heart attack but after other problems he lived for another 4 years.
I am not so bad with the expected niggles of old age & limited mobility but I still enjoy my time at the Cowcliffe green just 3 doors away from my home.
