The BCGBA have structured a deal with a charity to support bowling clubs financially in purchasing life-saving defibrillators.
We are aware of a number of bowling clubs that act as locations for the siting of external defibrillators purchased by community funding. Some bowling clubs have also funded their own equipment including Huddersfield RUFC. This is kept internally and is only available on matchdays as the remote location of the green makes it an unsuitable base for an externally sited emergency location. They didn't seek any charitable funding for this purchase preferring to make it an early benefit of the additional funding available from their Winter League profits.
There is a vast range of such devices available online from as low as £500 so tread carefully. External Defibrillators tend to be more costly than the indoor equivalent so be clear about what your requirements are. The fact that the device provided through the London Hearts Charity is a model widely adopted in the NHS should be of some assurance to likely purchasers.
This BCGBA scheme could be of tremendous interest to bowling clubs with the age balance of members inclining towards the older levels when such equipment becomes more attractive to members as a sensible benefit. This scheme almost halves the cost of such a facility and if coupled with some local community scheme can nullify the total cost entirely.
The example below shows that the cost to a club could be as low as £660 against the usual cost of £1,127. This includes an online training session on how to operate the devices. The outline details from the BCGBA are all below.
Over the last few weeks, we've been contacted by several Clubs enquiring about grants, or support, for defibrillators. With this in mind, we've spoken to London Hearts who are a registered Charity that supports local communities in installing defibrillators at significantly reduced costs.
London Hearts is a Charity and as such cannot charge for any products supplied, but they would simply ask that you donate to the minimum amount.....which is significantly cheaper than anywhere else.
The Defibrillator they supply is the dual-functioning Mindray C1A Defibrillator. The reasons they opt to supply this particular model are:
* Mindray is a major supplier to the NHS throughout England & Wales. They are therefore considered to be a reputable, financially sound company moving forward.
* The Mindray C1A Defibrillator is dual functioning and can therefore be applied to a person of any age and the pads are universal (so no need for different ages of pads – which causes confusion and wastes time)
* The Mindray C1A Defibrillator carries out a daily self-diagnostic test meaning it does not require servicing or maintain. The only maintenance is to change the battery once expired and the pads upon expiry or after use (Defib pads are not reusable)
* The Mindray C1A is a biphasic Defibrillator rather than Monophasic. Biphasic is the preferred type of Defibrillator. The escalating level of Joules shock on the Mindray C1A Defibrillator is 360 J – which is the best level of shock for a public AED.
