Winter League Review of the Division 6 matches played on Thursday 16 January
The new photo on the home page of the website shows a hard overnight frost at the Rugby Club which scuppered the anticipated return to action on that green. There were hopes that the morning sunshine would perform wonders and make it playable but too much of the green is in shadow and a low sun didn't help leaving everyone frustrated with the late postponement of the Division 7 programme..
However down the road at Netherton Con the Division 6 fixture programme went ahead as scheduled. Some of the green is in shadow but there was sufficient playable surface to justify starting the matches and as more bowlers got on to the green the frost was trodden into the grass to make it a return to action for the first time since before Christmas.
The action saw longtime leaders, Almondbury BC B strengthen their grip on the title with a whitewash win over the green host's B team. That leaves them with a 16-points lead at the top of the table and confirm that they clinch promotion to Division 5 for next season. They could add the title to that if results go their way next Thursday.
Second-placed team, Mirfield A, shared the points 4-4 with Huddersfield Recreation Club B to open the door to the Almondbury team which they grasped with both hands. The Mirfield team hang on the 2nd spot despite being held by the Recreation Club this week. Brockholes A lost their grip on 3rd place after losing to, and being passed by, Springwood C who now emerge as the second challenger for the other promotion place.
One piece of fighting back action came from that match when the Springwood pairs fought back from 1-14 down to take the game 21-16 and clinch the aggregate for a whitewash win which lifted them above their opponents and into the promotion chase.
New Mill C are 10 points off safety and need more than the two points won this week if they hope to avoid an end-of-season relegation. A 2-6 defeat to Outlane leaves them deep in trouble and with a match against promotion-chasing Mirfield A next week, things don't get any easier for them.
