Veterans League
Review of the Veterans 6-Man League fixtures played on Monday 26 August
Dad's Army favourite Private Fraser used to predict 'We are doomed' and that term could be readily applied to a number of 6-man teams already this season. Elland C&BC (Division 2) and Shepley B (Division 3) are so far adrift it is inevitable that both will finish bottom of their respective divisions. The same is increasingly likely in Division 1 where Lockwood Con and Paddock I&C now find themselves 10 points away from safety with 5 fixtures remaining.
That means they have to score 2 more points than their opponents for each of the 5 remaining weeks of the season and they both missed that target this week. Lockwood Con went down 2-5 at Milnsbridge A whilst Paddock I&C lost 1-6 at Skel Windmill A. With third from bottom Crosland Moor picking up two points from their trip to the leaders, Marsh United A, the 10 points gap remains intact.
That win for Marsh United A coupled with Waterloo winning by the same 5-2 score means there is no change at the top and the 3 points difference continues to separate the teams. The Marsh team have none of their 3 main rivals for the title to play again this season whereas 2nd placed Waterloo have to meet Shepley A and Skel Windmill A. All seven Division 1 fixtures went the way of the home teams and the formbook with the biggest win of the day being Golcar C&BC beating Thongsbridge A by 104-50.
Finally Clayton West are starting to put some daylight between themselves and a dogged Bradley & Colne team at the top of the Division 2 table. A 6-1 home win over Linthwaite Hall widened the gap to 9 points as Bradley & Colne needed the aggregate bonus points to stack up a 4-3 home win over Holmfirth A.
A 5-2 home win for Marsh Lib A over Almondbury Lib crept them a point nearer to the second promotion place and New Mill won for the 8th consecutive week to keep their name very much in the promotion picture. One of the four teams separated by 4 points will be joining Clayton West in the top division next season, but which one will it be?
A 5-2 home win for Greenhead Park A over Golcar Lib ended a 5 match losing run and took them out of the relegation places and dumped the beaten Linthwaite Hall team there. A third win in their last four matches for Hemplow continued to see them climb out of danger with a 6-1 away win at Lindley Lib B being the most impressive in that sequence.
With 6-1 wins for the top three teams in Division 3 means no change in the running order as Brockholes B show no sign of relinquishing their 16 point lead in the title race.
