Elland break clear at top of Division 3

Veterans League

Review of the Divisions 3, 4 & 5 matches played on Tuesday 6 August

The week started with Elland WMC and Denby Dale only separated by aggregate scores at the top of the Division 3 table. That all changed on Tuesday when Elland hit a purple patch to clock up an 8-1 away win at 5th placed Lindley Lib B. Couple that with defeats for their 2 nearest contenders, Denby Dale at Holmfirth A (3-6) and Brockholes A 3-6 at home to Thorpe Green, and the gap suddenly becomes 5 points.

The win for Thorpe Green was only their second of the season and the first away from home but it was only enough to inch them nearer to safety but still be dependent on one of three teams dropping into reverse sometime soon. Hemplow A show no real sign of doing that despite a first defeat in four at home to Slaithwaite this week.

Springwood took advantage of that by recording a 7-2 home win over relegation rivals Outlane to ease their own plight. Skel Windmill had a first win in 9 when beating Paddock I&C 7-2 but remain at the foot of the table for now.

Lockwood Con B took over at the top of Division 4 with an 8-1 home win over Brockholes B whilst previous leaders Marsh United B were hit with a 1-8 loss away at derby rivals Marsh Lib and dropped to 4th place as a result. Milnsbridge B have now emerged as the bigger threat to the leaders after a 7-2 home win over Huddersfield Recreation Club put them within a point of the leaders and made it 6 wins from their last 7 fixtures to make them the form team in the division.

The top two in Division 5 could be about to break away from the chasing pack as Dalton's 2-7 away defeat at leaders Netherton Con A sees the top two open up a 13-point lead which is a 4-point increase in the week. That was only a 2nd defeat in 10 for the Dalton side but painful all the same may have caused irreparable damage to their promotion hopes. David Brown Sports remain very much in contention for the title after a 6-3 home win over Paddock I&C made it 6 wins on the bounce for the 2nd placed team.

A first away win of the season for Almondbury BC B, 7-2 at Greenhead Park, reduced the gap to Holmfirth B to 3 points after the Holmfirth side were beaten 3-6 at Kirkheaton C&BC B. Hemplow B are within range of the bottom three after losing 1-8 away at Kirkheaton Con B which lifted the winners back into the top four. New Mill B won the mid-table tussle against Broad Oak B which reduced the gap between the two teams to 3 points.
