First 2 Qualifiers in Pairs KO

Winter League

We have the first two qualifiers for the inaugural running of the new Pairs KO competition. On a wonderfully thick green carpet which was a little pushy but very smooth with no bumps which suited many of the bowlers and was totally different to the surface I last played on here 18 months ago.

There were 10 pairs from Division 3 teams that had entered and turned up at Thorpe Green on Friday with three of those pairs being home bowlers so they were handicapped to -3 in their opening round. Two of those home pairs progressed through to Round 2 where they had a -2 handicap and in both cases they were beaten at that point.

All matches were of 15 ends or 21-Up whichever comes first and in all cases on Friday it was 15 ends that came first which generally took just under the hour. So just under a total three hours of bowling for some of the bowlers which should be a limit in mid-winter. However 15 ends proved insufficient in one case where the Springwood versus Thorpe Green C meeting saw a 14-14 draw after the 15 ends so a 16th end of sudden death was played with Sue Hallas and Graham Rawlinson of Thorpe Green claiming the extra point to progress.

The two qualifiers came from Denby Dale and Huddersfield Recreation Club A and they will both go through to the Round of the Last 16 to be staged at Netherton Con on 14 February 2025.

All the results and photographs are below with a special mention from the HuddWeb food critic of the Thorpe Green catering team.

Josie and Maureen provided the catering service with a range of sandwiches, cakes and buns and a wonderful hot concoction with no name. It was a cross between a soup and a stew with pulled ham shank, potatoes, carrots and peas and I enjoyed it immensely. Josie explained that she had cooked the stew/soup in her sturdy steamer which was a family heirloom that she had used for the last 50 years.

The steamer had been passed down from her mother which had at least another family owner before that. The picture above shows the two ladies in their club kitchen with the family heirloom of an indeterminate age for cooking unnamed dishes but known within the family as pea soup. Great story, great fodder!
