Greenhead Park team told to expect the worse

Club News

Officials of the Greenhead Park Veterans League team have been given warning that the future maintenance of the two park greens is under threat. They still await formal notification of any change in arrangements but they have been advised to 'expect the worse'.

The club have played on the greens there for over 97 years and they were founder members of the Veterans League when it was first formed in 1970. The Veterans League is now the only League that they play in and they would really like to reach their 100th anniversary playing under their own name.

That is now under threat so the club are seeking a new green to relocate to for the 2025 season in advance of any formal notification about the future of their home green being received. They currently have one team in the 10-Man Tuesday League along with two teams in the 6-Man Monday League. The obvious link to Ravensknowle Park would see a clash of dates as the sitting tenants also play on Mondays in the Heavy Woollen League so that may be a non-starter. The club has also spoken with one other local club about using their green but under the Greenhead Park name. However that is not financially attractive to club members at present.

Any club that feels that they could offer a home for the 16 Greenhead Park bowlers on Monday and Tuesday afternoons to play under their old name should make contact with Richard Pearcy by email at richardpearcey@tiscali.co.uk or by phone at 01484 531708 or 07813 738162

We look forward to Huddersfield bowling rallying around the club and to being able to report on a happy ending to this real threat to their existence and the demise of another local bowling club.

HISTORY OF BOWLING IN GREENHEAD PARK

Kirklees Council first considered the provision of bowling greens

in the Park in April 1920, however it was not until 1923 that the

site was chosen and in 1925 the turf for a bowling green was

purchased.

Two steel garages that had been previously used as temporary

changing rooms for tennis were moved to the area of the bowling

green in 1927 and subsequently the bowling club was formed.

In 1935 the Council approved a plan and estimate for the

erection of a bowling pavilion which was built by an Eric

Jenkinson at a cost of £140 and this was opened by the Mayor

on 15th July of that year.

In 1947, Greenhead Park Amateur Bowling Association put

forward a request for another green to be built.

In 1957 the construction of a men’s recreation room was

approved and this was built by John Cooke & Son Ltd. and

opened in 1958.

In 1970 the bowling club joined the Huddersfield & District

Veterans Bowling League and won the championship that year.

We remain in this league as of today.

In 2011 the club was forced to move away from the park for one

season whilst a new Pavilion was erected, this opening in 2012.
