The Ladies League annual pairs knock-out competition was held at Lindley Liberal Club last Sunday. This report has been taken from the Huddersfield Ladies Bowlsnet front page.
Julie Mallinson and Linda Gledhill of Lockwood Con triumphed over Tracey Singleton and Charlie White of Broad Oak in a field of 24 pairs to become the 44th winners of the Hilda England Trophy.
The competition was held on Sunday the 7th July at the splendidly presented Lindley Liberal Club green and despite the showery rain the standard of bowling remained consistently high throughout the day.
In the first semi-final Julie and Linda overcame the talented pairing of Elaine Bell and Sophie McCaffrey of Jackson Bridge. This was an enthralling match of the highest quality. After toing and froing, the game was level at 18 across and the pressure was on. A strong finish by Julie and Linda saw them over the line 21-18, in what was one of the most entertaining matches of the day.
In the other semi-final Tracey and Charlie faced Stacey Dyson and Suzi Ladbrooke of Lockwood Con. Tracey and Charlie soon notched up 11-5 lead and were never headed, running out to a 21-12 victory. Maybe Stacey and Suzi were still recovering from their heroic performance in their previous game against the formidable partnership of Lorraine Hirst and Karen Hill. The game was all but lost at 18-9 down when Stacey found a game changing mark where the line proved too elusive for their opponents. 11 points on the bounce resulted in a most unlikely looking win for Stacey and Suzi 21-18.
The final was an intriguing topsy-turvey affair. Julie and Linda raced into an early 7-1 lead playing their customary short marks. All changed then as Tracey and Charlie commanded the jack and swept into the corners producing a 9 break, the score now was 10-7. From that stage ends went this way and that, but two crucial counts of 3 and a strong 6 break finish brought a 21-15 victory to Julie and Linda.
Maureen Beaumont a 5 times winner of this competition gave out the prizes on behalf of our sponsor. Our thanks for contributing to the success of the day go to our sponsor SB Homes Ltd and everyone at Lindley Lib for the superb green, hospitality and tireless measuring throughout the day. And finally to all those who entered particularly those who took a leap of faith and played in their first pairs competition.
