Home & Away or Neutral greens?

League News

The Huddersfield Bowling Association Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 12 February when for the second consecutive year a motion will be made to introduce fixtures in the Saturday leagues being played on a Home & Away basis instead of the current Neutral green format. Last year the motion failed by 1 or 2 votes (depending on who you listen to) and another attempt to reach the two-thirds majority required will be made again this year.

On Sunday the first of a new trilogy of postings from Dave Parkin will be on HuddWeb which will look back at the 127 years history of the Huddersfield Saturday League including the Home & Away v Neutral Greens format over the years starting in 1896. It is not intended to take sides in the current debate but to provide a historical record of events over time as a background to the current decision-making process.

The AGM calling notice is below followed by a paper from Mark Atkinson on behalf of Crosland Moor. Anyone with views on this matter is welcome to add their comments to this posting.

The Calling Notice

Huddersfield Bowling Association - Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the Association will take place on Monday 12th February 2024.

All clubs are required to have 1 club representative present at the meeting.

There has been 1 new proposal raised and seconded for the new season which is as follows:

All matches in the Huddersfield Men's Saturday Bowling League to be played in a Home and Away format instead of using neutral geens.

This proposal will be voted on at the meeting so please ensure this is discussed at club level before the meeting. If passed this will apply to the 2024 season.

From Sunday on HuddWeb from Dave Parkin ....

The fact that the motion for home & away venues came to within one or two votes last year, indicates a clear majority for such an outcome.

By using a qualified majority rule for any change, two thirds in this case, power is directly transferred to the minority.

This forces twice the number of votes for change, than that of the status quo.

Or has the effect of reducing the power of change votes to half, whichever way you want to look at it.

This has the potential, in a league of this size, for merely 15 club reps to dictate the outcome to the rest. Change the two thirds rule I hear you say.....................guess what.
