Lockwood Con hosting debut

Winter League

Well the weather may not have been warm but the welcome was at Lockwood Con yesterday for the club's first day as the host club in the Winter League's Division 8 fixture programme.

The back gate entry point also had its debut and proved a welcome short trip to a free nearby parking place for a number of bowlers. Here is where you can learn how to find the back gate entry point.

The catering team provided a range of hot and cold fodder for bowlers and spectators, with a choice of various fillings for toasties, home-made soup and various cakes and buns. All reasonably priced and equally welcome.

The green looked in very good nick much appreciated by the bowlers with over 70 people there for the opening day of the Division 8 season enjoying the bowling and the catering selection. Inevitably there were a number of short delays getting the correct bowlers and pairs on to the green at the same time with 6 new teams in action it was not only the hosts that were finding their way around the occasion. But everything considered a grand first day for Lockwood Con, the eight bowling teams and winter bowling in general.

On the green the two teams (Golcar C&BC and Mirfield B) who had played in the League last year had the advantage of familiarisation which enabled them to clock up opening 6-2 wins. That familiarisation didn't extend to the green which was new to all 8 teams but knowing the matchday format and having experience of winter bowling counted in their favour. That wont last long and we can expect things to change over the next few weeks. There was also opening day wins for the hastily put-together team from Linthwaite Hall B who didn't even expect to be bowling in the League 5 days ago. A first win for Cowcliffe C completed the on-green action.

We have 23 photographs taken on the day including the League Treasurer modelling the new back gate entrance via the Victoria Road ginnell. There is also a photograph of the new scoreboard (pictured below) inside the clubhouse which kept bowlers and spectators informed of match scores throughout the day.
