Review of the Division 6 fixtures played at Netherton Con on Thursday 17 October including a matchday photo gallery

'Netherton/Sunshine/Hot' are not three words you would expect to use about the opening day of the Winter League Division 6 season. Yet here we are in mid-October and it is very hot in the Netherton sunshine as the host green celebrate their good fortune with the weather by adding a new notch to the record books by going top of the table at this early stage of the competition.

Seven of the eight teams in this division played in Division 5 last year and under the League reorganisation find themselves pitched against each other again but under the Division 6 banner this time. The eighth team being New Mill C who finished as runners-up in Division 6 last season and stay in Division 6 under the reorganisation but are effectively promoted as they are pitched against 7 teams from last season's Division 5.

Huddersfield Recreation Club B and Netherton Con B finished last season sitting in the bottom two places in Division 5 but open the new season by taking the top two places in Division 6. What a difference a six-month break can make as Netherton Con B, befitting a host green, take top-spot. All four matches on the opening day ended 6-2 in favour of the 'home' teams with the Netherton Con B taking top-spot courtesy of a bigger Aggregate For total after beating Springwood C 58-49. Huddersfield Recreation Club B will be delighted to open with a win over New Mill C by 54-46 to sneak into second place.

The other two winners were the B teams from Almondbury BC and Brockholes to create the 4-way tie at the top of the table. Lots still to happen of course and it may even rain on a Thursday in Netherton but the bowlers will be well protected from that with the new covered sitting area a welcome addition to the facilities at this winter-friendly club.

Here are a number of opening day photographs taken to prove to any doubters that the sun can actually shine on a Thursday in Netherton.
