New Robert Hitchen Cup for Winter League

Winter League

The Winter League is pleased to announce the donation of two more new trophies for the 2024-25 season. With the introduction of two new divisions for the new season, the League is looking to continue the practice of awarding two trophies per division. One for the Division Champions and one for the Division's Top Bowler.

The League is always receptive and grateful for the support we have been fortunate enough to attract over the years to keep this tradition going. The latest trophy donations come from Elland WMC and Peter Swinden of Meltham BC.

Peter has been a long-standing friend of the League with generous donations towards the original Founder's Fund and subsequently to mark the arrival of his first granddaughter the Lily Rose Trophy. His daughter has now presented Peter with another grandchild this year so he is doing the honourable matching of a donation of another trophy to mark that family milestone with the introduction of the Charlie Jude Trophy.

Elland WMC are new to the Winter League this season and have offered a new trophy to the League to mark the contribution of their club member Robert Hitchen who has made, and continues to make, towards bowling and in particular to Elland WMC. Robert has been a bowler for 53 years and was the youngest bowler to play for Yorkshire as a 17-year old in 1976. His most prestigious win (in his words) being the BCGBA Champion of Champions Cup at the Blackpool Waterloo in 1985.

Robert has played for Yorkshire for 40 years including a number of times as captain. He is also the Elland WMC green keeper and does a fantastic job in keeping the green to a very high standard. Robert is still playing bowls at the very top level and recognised throughout the sport as the model bowler and clubman. All in all Robert is a great all round guy and the League is honoured that the club has decided to mark his contribution to bowling and their club in this manner.

With two new divisions requiring four new trophies we still have vacancies for a further two new trophies for the 2024-25 season. Anyone interested in learning more about these opportunities should contact the League Secretary, Jeff Jacklin, by email (jefftheref2000@yahoo.co.uk) or by phone at 07968 171 197. Interest from clubs, businesses, families or individuals are all welcome.

No decision has yet been taken on which trophy goes to which division. It is popular for host clubs who have donated trophies to have the supported division playing on their green throughout the season. With the reorganisation of the divisions this season there will probably be some changes to the allocation of trophies and these are not included in the table below which just covers the situation for last season.
