Promotion race may be over by Christmas

Winter League

Review of the Division 7 fixtures played at the Rugby Club on Thursday 7 November

If the top two teams in Division 7 continue to accumulate points at this rate the promotion race will have finished by Christmas with only the destiny of the title to be settled between Huddersfield RUFC and Cowcliffe B. Both teams clocked up 8-0 wins this week beating Meltham B and Hanging Heaton B respectively.

I may be a little premature in that forecast but there is hope for the chasing pack as the RUFC are likely to decline promotion as they can do under the new rule. If they finish in the top two and they wish to keep their catering and admin teams available on their hosting matchdays that wouldn't be possible if they were promoted to Division 6 as they also play on a Thursday. This is exactly what this rule was introduced to avoid. That could give the other teams the chance to get promoted by finishing third although that would need to be confirmed by the League's Management Committee and may depend on what other teams have applied to join the League at that time.

With Hanging Heaton B suffering a whitewash defeat that left the way open for Marsh Lib to join in the battle for 3rd place as they moved level on points with Hanging Heaton after beating Broad Oak B 8-0. Lockwood Con B suffered a 5th consecutive defeat when going down 2-6 to Kirkheaton Con B who retain an interest in that third place finish as well.
