R.I.P. Douglas Barrowclough

Rest in Peace

Thongsbridge Bowling Club sadly announce the death of Douglas Barrowclough, passing away peacefully in his sleep at HRI on Thursday 10 March, aged 88 years.

Douglas took up bowling ‘reluctantly’ on his retirement thinking it was an old mans game but said he never regretted it for a moment. He was very competitive still winning matches in 2021 in our vets Division 4 team and in the Huddersfield League Division 3. When asked by the writer to play above his level in the Littlewood Cup he always gave a doughty performance.

Douglas was well known in Meltham and the Holme Valley where he ran his own building business for many years. He was a sportsman through and through supporting the Terriers, The Giants and was a member of Yorkshire cricket. After conscription where he played rugby union in the forces he turned out for Underbank rugby league.

He was never found wanting if asked to step forward undertaking roles as President of Holmfirth Cricket Club and at Thongsbridge where he chaired our veterans group and was Club Representative for our club. His wife Peggy gave him enthusiastic assistance in these roles until very recently. The brass band world was also grateful for his support particularly Hade Edge Band where he had strong family connections.

The funeral service will be at Holmfirth Parish Church, date and time to be announced.

Rest in peace dear cousin. Richard Armitage
