Rest in Peace
Yesterday I posted a report on the passing of my Kirkheaton Cons Veterans League teammate Roland 'Ron' Swallow. That was primarily a personal remembrance and today I would like to add to that by providing this bowling obituary of Ron covering some of the highlights from his 60 years bowling in local leagues and competitions. I am very grateful to Dave Parkin for these press cuttings with thanks also for Peter Muff of the Huddersfield Examiner at his best in capturing the level of bowling and the achievements of Ron better than I ever could.
I did make reference in yesterday's posting of Ron's inclusion in the 1971 Henry Taylor Cup Final playing for Crosland Moor and the details of that are included in this HuddWeb archive posting here
I also mentioned in the previous notification of Ron's passing, a belief that Ron had won the Huddersfield Merit at some time in his bowling career. That is confirmed in the first of three Examiner articles reproduced below which identified his success over Peter Kain in the 1990 Final at Almondbury Liberal Club as the peak of Ron's bowling career as he highlighted the competition as 'the Wembley of Huddersfield bowling'.
Also captured is a report on Ron winning the 1988 Barker Sports Spring Handicap when he beat his Crosland Moor Liberal Club teammate Trevor Blackburn in the Final at Linthwaite Hall. There is also below a photograph featuring Ron as one of the four semi-finalists of the 1985 Huddersfield Bass Yorkshire Handicap played at Lindley Liberal Club.
