Another report from Mark Atkinson this time on last Friday's Finals Day of this year's Open KO.
Crosland Moor Open '64 2023
Another fantastic night of action at Crosland Moor saw Simon Coupe at the double as he picked up his second win in the event, replicating his maiden win in 2021. Simon was in imperious form all night and truth be told he was rarely troubled as he consistently found good bowls all over the green.
He opened up against local favourite Harry Lumb, who looked like he could give Simon a game as they exchanged points up to about 9 across. Simon then went up a gear, finding a long piece to his liking to run out a comfortable 21-10 winner.
Next up was Panel colleague Neil Bithell who was high after a thumping win against Flicker, but it was Simon who set off the better, and never looked back as he closed out a 21-9 win.
Into the final, a close contest was promised as Liam Griffin had done the hard work as he picked up solid wins against quality opposition in GI and Josh Mordue. Simon had other ideas however, as he managed to keep Liam at arms length all game, always 4-5 in front before running out a 21-13 winner.
So that's 2 wins in the past 3 years at the Moor for Simon, with just one defeat in 16 games by my reckoning. Can anyone stop him? We'll find out next year.
Quick thank you to everyone who supported the event this year, whether it was coming to watch, competing, slurping or even just liking my nonsense posts. It all helps to create a bit of a buzz about an event and ultimately, keeps a little club like ours going. See you all next year
