Ladies Works League
Slick, Scarey and Sunny - The Ladies Works League Singles Competition
What an unexpected marvelous day (given our record of picking deluge days) for our singles competition played last Sunday. As you will see from the photos Thorpe Green was a patchwork of green and near bare and almost impossible to bowl in places - just marvelous to behold!
A round-robin format was played. The winners of the group stages all won both their games so there was no need for any additional analysis of the scores. The four who managed to master the very tricky conditions best were Linda Chadwick and Jean Brook from the Bolster Moor team, and Marie Nicholson and Karen Gant from Alicia Dawn Photography.
In the semis, both Jean Brook and Karen Gant got off to flying starts that proved decisive in the outcomes of the games although Marie Nicholson did make a late run back to within six before Karen clinched victory.
Semi-final scores Jean Brook 21 Linda Chadwick 5 Karen Gant 21 Marie Nicholson 14
The final was won by Karen Gant, and in so doing retained her title of 2017 when the competition was last played. Karen again got away to the perfect start playing short tricky meandering marks over the crown, and lead 17 - 4. Jean did produce a late rally to advance her score to double figures before a close measure to Karen sealed the game.
Final score - Karen Gant 21 Jean Brook 10
Many congratulations to Karen for back-to-back wins, albeit it was 2017! Only one other player has outperformed this feat and that was Sue Harper another short mark specialist who was unbelievably unstoppable for 3 consecutive years from 1997 to 1999.
Congratulations to all other prize winners and to all those who entered and lost so making the competition possible. Thank you to Karen Rausse for providing excellent unobtrusive refereeing in the final. And finally thank you to all at Thorpe Green for making us most welcome, for the hospitality, for the measuring, and for the challenging green.
A very delightful day.
