The first day of the 2021 bowling year for Huddersfield Veterans heralded the first storm of the season as one match never got started but it didn't stop the Champions who began with a successful first-day win in defence of their title.

The western outpost that is Meltham as usual attracts the worst of any storm and so it was this week with the home team's Section A match against Skel Windmill B rained off and rearranged for this Friday. Champions Netherton Con picked up where they left off in 2019 with a home win although Oakfield gave a good account of themselves before losing 2-5. That win wasn't good enough to take them to the top position with two teams beating that target. Brockholes A finished in the bottom two at the end of the 2019 season but were reprieved in a league reorganisation so beating promoted Longwood 6-1 this week was a good start. They go top courtesy of a better 'Aggregate For' total over Crosland Moor who also logged a 6-1 opening day win away at Milnsbridge BC. Thongsbridge B completed the top section action with a good away win in a 4-3 success at Paddock I&C.

Still a couple of match outcomes missing from the other two sections whilst the Meltham v Skel Windmill B match never got started because of the weather and the teams will try again this Friday. The two games played in Section B both resulted in wins for the away teams with Marsh United winning 6-1 at Primrose Hill Lib including the section's top individual score of the day of 21-2 from David Holmes from the winning side. Honley Con played their first-ever match in this competition after waiting a year to do so and it was worth the wait as they recorded a 5-2 away win at Skel Windmill A.

Not only was the day wet but it was cold as well but two outstanding individual performances in one Section B match warmed some bowlers up. In the match between Holmfirth B and Hemplow John Cocking of Hemplow recorded a 21-0 win and J Chilton of the home team almost matched that with a 21-1 scoreline. The team result is more important and that went the way of the Holmfirth side by 5-2, in fact, all three results in this section were home wins. Shepley B and Slaithwaite both logged 6-1 wins over Brockholes B and Holmfirth A respectively to share the opening week top spot.
