Surprise winners of Over-70s Pairs KO

Veterans League

David Brown Sports pair of Derek Frost and Mick Wenzel are the surprise winners of the Over-70's Pairs KO competition after beating three Division 1 pairs on Finals Day and they didn't need their +4 handicap to clinch any of them. First up were the 2023 holders of the title, Denis Garner and Paul Winterburn (+2) who were beaten 21-19 to give early warning to the other contenders that the lowest-ranked pair left in the competition were not there just to make up the numbers.

Next up were the Lowerhouses pair of Les Holmes and Graham Hirst, who were swept aside by the Division 5 pairing with no respect for the Division 1 Champions representatives playing on their own green. An emphatic 21-12 victory on the day gave them their route through to the Final where they had to face the Waterloo pair of Alan Stephenson and Robert Mudd. After building a 15-5 lead, Frost and Wenzel were hit with a revival from the Waterloo reps to go 17-across but then claimed the last 4 chalks needed to lift the title.
