Memories
Bill Blackburn read the news about the potential closure of the Greenhead Park greens and recalled better days for these public greens ....
Sorry to hear about the possible closure of Greenhead Park greens, In the 1950's, 60's and 70's they were well used by members of the public and always in good condition.
The council also held a yearly bowling competition, run and organised by the Greenhead Park bowlers. It was not unusual to attract upwards of 500 bowlers, there was a competition for men and women. Preliminary rounds were bowled on Tuesday and Thursday evenings until they got down to the final 16.
The final was always held on the same day as the veg and flower show which was held in a huge marquee, the night ended with a firework display.
I was lucky enough to win the event in 1976. I still have the Examiner report. Won 21-19 first round, then 21-18, followed by a 21-17 success in the semis and a 21-16 win in the final. Winner received £20 and the two finalists had tea with the mayor. Happy days.
