Threat to Leeds greens still very alive

Bowling News

At the beginning of March, Leeds City Council announced a stay of execution of the threat to close 31 bowling greens in the city until the end of the summer season. My reading of the situation at that time was that the immediate threat had gone away and work would be undertaken over the summer months to examine the options for going forward.

Those options would include clubs taking on a leasehold agreement or clubs taking over the maintenance work using council-owned equipment or a hefty increase in green fees to counter the financial loss the Council have to overcome. However, that understanding could be wrong as at least one threatened club has a different perspective on what that really means.

The threat to bowling greens remains very much alive according to one threatened Leeds club as Harehills Park BC reacts strongly to the latest manoeuvres from Leeds City Council. Below is a Facebook posting from the club denouncing the consultation process as a sham and states that this has always been about a 'planned decimation of our bowling greens in Leeds.'
