Top 2 tremble as pack closes in

Veterans League

Review of the 10-Man League fixtures played on 21 June

The top two teams in Division 1 both lost and the next four all won to concertina the table somewhat with 10-points now between the top six. Golcar Lib 'A' stay top despite losing 3-6 away at improving Waterloo with Lockwood Con 'A's same score defeat at Cowcliffe helping to preserve that lead. The chasing pack are closing in and as well as Cowcliffe winning there were also wins for Kirkheaton Con 'A' (6-3 at home to Clayton West) and Rastrick who extended their winning home run to six when seeing off Marsh United 'A' 6-3.

The two Lindley teams are becoming increasingly adrift at the foot of the table and are now 13 points from safety as both suffered heavy defeats this week. Lindley BC 'A' stay bottom after losing 1-8 at Elland C&BC 'A' whilst Longwood eased their own relegation fears after beating Lindley Lib 'A' 7-2.

Almondbury BC 'A' seriously damaged Bradley & Colne's Division 2 promotion aspirations when beating them 7-2 this week and a drop from 3rd to 5th for the losers. The winners increased their hold on the second promotion place behind Milnsbridge 'A' who had a good 6-3 away win at Netherton Con 'A'. The top two have opened up an 8-point gap over the chasing pack now led by Lowerhouses who jump from 5th to 3rd after beating Shepley 7-2.

Brockholes 'A' had a welcome second win of the season with a 6-3 home victory over fellow strugglers Thorpe Green 'A' with only Lockwood Con 'B' between them who enjoyed a good 6-3 home win over Hemplow 'A' who were suffering a fourth consecutive away defeat which sees them slipping precariously towards the relegation zone. A big 9-0 home win for Thongsbridge 'A' propelled them up 3 places in the table to sixth, overtaking the team they beat, New Mill 'A', Shepley and Slaithwaite who beat Broad Oak 'A' 6-3 to end a run of four straight defeats.

Division 3 leaders Linthwaite Hall suffered a surprise defeat at lowly Kirkheaton C&BC 'A' and forfeited top place to Denby Dale who had a great 7-2 away win at third-placed Holmfirth 'A', their first home defeat of the season, who slip a place to 4th as a result. Kirkheaton C&BC 'A' may be struggling in the bottom half of the table but have beaten the top two teams in their last two home matches to hint at better times ahead.

The 4th and 5th placed teams went head-to-head and it was the home side, Golcar Lib 'B' who emerged as 8-1 winners over Paddock I&C who drop from 4th to 7th position. Huddersfield Recreation Club made it 5 losses in 5 matches on the road when going down this time at Skel Windmill. The result of the match between the bottom 3 teams of Springwood and Lindley Lib 'B' are not known at posting time.

The top two clashed in Division 4 which saw leaders Lindley BC 'B' stretch their advantage to 3 points after an emphatic 8-1 home win over Elland C&BC 'B' who drop to 3rd place as a result. Ravensknowle Park return to a promotion place after beating Meltham 'B' 6-3 and an 8-1 home win for Primrose Hill Lib over Brockholes 'B' sees them move up two places to 4th spot. No wins for any of the bottom 5 teams with a heavy 1-8 reversal at Milnsbridge 'B' for Thongsbridge 'B' keep them well in the relegation mix.

Another top two clash this time in Division 5 went the way of the visiting Kirkheaton Con 'B' who won 6-3 at Marsh Lib. That gives the winners a 5-point lead over Dalton who passed Marsh Lib after an 8-1 home win over Netherton Con 'B'. Another 8-1 scoreline this time involving Broad Oak 'B' over bottom team Holmfirth 'B' keeps them in touch with the top quartet.
