Top Yorkshire bowlers 1946-2022

Memories

Below is a table showing all the 386 bowlers that have played for the Yorkshire Senior men's team from 1946-2022 in the order of most matches played. You can add to these the 2023 records as recently listed on this website.

That addition will not change the running order at the top of the table with Lower Hopton and Elland WMC bowler Robert 'Bob' Hitchen well out in front with a record spanning 44 years (1976-2019) to collect 166 County appearances. he is also the only bowler to have won over 100 times for the County. An amazing record and Bob is still going strong in the top local leagues. Look out for a press cutting about Bob's Yorkshire debut as a 17-year-old which will be online later today.

Of the current batch of County bowlers, Ashley Daykin leads the most appearances and you can add his four matches this season to make him up to 115 with an excellent 65% win record. Ashley also claims the 2nd longest winning run of 15 wins on the trot which is only bettered by the 17 consecutive wins of Alf Wilby.

You can have lots of memories by looking through the list but don't forget to scroll right to the bottom of this list to see the 53 bowlers that have only played once for Yorkshire and then look at the 10 of those that won on their County debuts but never played for Yorkshire again.

I would like to provide a similar posting on the Yorkshire Ladies records but that isn't likely to happen any time soon. Whilst the men's records have been carefully researched and completed over a prolonged period the same cannot be said for the ladies. Their records are far from complete and despite the best efforts of a few over the years, there are still too many gaps to create a meaningful history of ladies' appearances at present. Should that ever change I would be delighted to add it to the website.

Also , of the 53 bowlers who only played once, the vast majority relate to a long time ago eg the 1940’s to the 1970’s. Only 1 was selected in 2022 ( could have played since) . Could it be all those years ago there were more bowlers to choose from , perhaps bowlers were more keener then than now to play for their County ? Who knows!!

Philip, not from Lindley today but from a very warm Cyprus looking towards 5 bowling greens !! 👍👋😂

Robert Hitchen’s incredible record looks unbeatable.

perhaps outstanding young bowlers nowadays get distracted by other interests and get lost to the game. The statistics raise lots of questions eg Jonath Wood who played 9 games and won them all. Could be as simple as he left the area .

As you say what about all the bowlers who only played one game and won but not selected again.

Philip of Lindley
