Paul Sykes Memorial Competition Weston Park Trophy 2021 - Full Report from Liam Sykes
First of all I would like to start with the positives that came from yesterday. I've not been to this green in over two years and the improvement in the green in that time was outstanding, immaculate condition and potentially the best playing surface I've played on all year. Bravo to the club's greenkeeper Peter Beaumont.
A huge thank you to my grandad, Dave Sykes, who managed the draw and the general running of the competition on the day so that I could play. (One day I will get my name on my Dad's trophy... )
We run this competition not only in my Dad's memory but in aid of the hospital where he was treated, at Weston Park. I'm absolutely delighted to announce that we raised a massive £840.61 on the day. I cannot express how much this means to us and can't thank enough all of those who attended, bought food and raffle tickets, and donated. This competition simply wouldn't exist without such fantastic support.
We were delighted to welcome Jimmy Davison back to the winner's enclosure, despite living only 10 minutes away this was his first-ever visit to Brockholes. Jimmy played close all day and won each game with relative ease before finding himself 11-7, 14-11 and 19-15 behind in the final to Andy Cairns, who reverted from the corners game which had served him so well on the day, to an extremely tidy game on the far green edge. Jimmy played a great bowl to get back in and extended the mark to just over three-quarter corners, the opposite corners to which Cairns had been playing most of the day, and ran out a worthy 21-19 winner.
Unfortunately I can't bring myself to not speak about the absolute fiasco that was our first round yesterday. Never in 5 years of running this competition have I had to scratch players at the green, but yesterday I had to scratch 4. Not only this, but waking up on the morning of the competition to a further 6 last minute drop outs. Now I know that we are all human, things do come up, and some of these drop outs were genuine, I understand these are unfortunate and sometimes can't be avoided. But when 2 of these drop outs have then popped up in other competitions elsewhere on the same day, quite frankly, is very poor. It's no wonder people don't want to go through organising competitions when there's a minority of players who can't display an ounce of decency or respect to the organisers.
I won't be naming and shaming like some suggested I should do, but I know these 2 players will be reading this knowing who they are. I can only further apologise to their opponents who had travelled for a 9.30am game and didn't get one until after midday as a result.
Ultimately, the day was a huge success, with a ridiculous standard of bowling on offer, a shed load of money raised, and a 5th different winner in the competition's 5 year lifespan.
We'll be reverting back to our usual start of season date in April next year, details to follow and entries will open in the next couple of months. With this being our first attempt at a one day 64, we have been given some helpful feedback which will be taken on board on considered for next year.
