THE HISTORY OF WINTER BOWLING IN HUDDERSFIELD

Part 5: 2000-2009 by Dave Parkin

The new millennium saw a new location for this correspondent (The Wirral) and I bowled a few times at Heswall RBL thanks to the recently departed, Alf McDermott.. It was also a new location for the Griffin bowlers for “Apres Ski” as the pub attached closed so bowlers decamped to the Junction Inn and also obtained some sponsorship from the local landlord.

Ashley Daykin won the New Years Day comp in 2000 (his 16th win at the Griffin) and was to do so again at least twice more. However, as the decade closed, the “sixteen” winners had a familiar look (HIRST & SIGSWORTH) apart from one name, Jack DYSON who hoovered up his 2nd, 3rd & 4th wins at the Griffin to be come the “Young Pretender” and dominate from here onwards. David WALKDEN was the last person to win this decade.

The major winners this decade included Ronnie WORMALD, Steven HIRST & Paul SIGSWORTH all winning their 4th CHAMPION of CHAMPIONS titles plus WORMALD adding a BERNARD SIGSWORTH MEMORIAL to his 2 STONES CUPs. It was the last ROSEBOWL winner that stands out as Jack DYSON won it for his first GRFFIN win & the next 3 followed very quickly as we mentioned above. He wouldn’t have to wait long for his second major either. More of that in the next article.

The player of the Noughties had to be SIGGY as the article below talked of his attempt to win the opening Sixteen 5 years in a row. He won 5 of them in the 2004/05 season and won 70 times at the GRIFFIN this decade in all comps.

In one of the last editions of Bowlers World that he was later to archive online, future Griffin member, Andy CAIRNS asked the question “Can we become an all year round sport?” I think we now know the answer to that
