THE HISTORY OF WINTER BOWLING IN HUDDERSFIELD
Part 7: A Recap & Winter Bowling in 2024 by Dave Parkin
The Final Episode
Once upon a time, if you weren’t one of the GRIFFIN members, winter bowling options were abroad in Portugal, Spain, Cyprus & even the USA on organised holidays by The Examiner bowls correspondent, Peter MUFF.
In 2024, local bowlers are spoiled for choice for playing & watching bowling in the winter months.
We all know about the three days of Huddersfield Winter League (Monday, Wednesday & Thursday).
There is also an outdoor league at Halifax on a Thursda
Milnsbridge on a Friday
Heckmondwike on a Wednesday & a Saturday
The greatest rival & a source of inter-club matches for the GRIFFIN is the SPEN WINTER SWEEPS on a Saturday where 40 bowlers fight out each week.
Below is a post from The GRIFFIN private FB group that has 470 members.
The GRIFFIN plays some very different rules and here are a selection:
You get two throws of the Jack to set a mark
You use you own Jack & can use any type of woods
The final starts from the centre of the green
Cut straws to measure (mentioned below)
Or even use a mobile phone that was used once.
Here are some of the GRIFFIN records
One change is that Harold Barlow also won 5 sixteens in the first full winter season, 1968/69 to match Siggy’s 5.
I hope you have enjoyed this series of memories & special thanks for Mark ATKINSON for use of the GRIFFIN stats.
