Winter League
I really enjoyed being part of the activity at Lockwood Park on Thursday with 5 hours of bowling on a mild, almost Spring-like, day with the convivial atmosphere always associated with the venue. The competition was always keen but not over-bearing as of the 25 matches played only three resulted in wins to single figures. Oh and I am sure that you will be pleased to learn of my latest raffle win of another breakfast board. You've got to be in it to win it!
The second qualifying competition for the 2024 Winter Cup was completed at the Rugby Club on Thursday and on a truly mild day four bowlers progressed to the Round of the Last 24. They are Robert Spencer (Linthwaite Hall), Russ Auty (Broad Oak), Nigel Roebuck (Huddersfield RUBC) and Jean Winchcombe (Linthwaite Hall). Well done to them all.
With plenty of short-sleeved shirts and shorts in evidence, 29 bowlers enjoyed the hospitality of the host club if not the opposition. Certainly, John Belfield will feel badly done to after meeting the Division 6 top bowler twice in a week and despite his best efforts he couldn't progress past Jean Winchcombe. Jean and John being the top two bowlers (in that order) in the Division 6 averages at the end of the League season.
The light was starting to fade as we passed four o]clock but the interest was still there with the final eight contenders locked in battle with close competition for the final four places to progress to the Round of the Last 24. With a +5 handicap start some of the qualifying four are likely to prove serious opposition to higher division bowlers when they all meet on 10 April. All in all it was a good day in the life of Winter League bowling. That completes the first season of Winter League bowling at the Rugby Club and most enjoyable it has been. Did I mention my latest breakfast board raffle win?
