Winter League
The opening day of the Winter League's Division 3 programme ended exactly as the opening day of Division 1 had last week with four 6-2 scorelines. In addition we had the four new teams going head to head on a glorious sunny introduction to winter bowling. That sun brought out the spectators as well which are now permitted after a strange first incompleted season and we look forward to better times. Everyone knows the weather wont be like this every week but the fact that we can now bowl in front of an audience makes a huge difference to the atmosphere around the green.
Carol Collier prepares to throw the first jack of the Winter League season at Thorpe Green
The Thorpe Green 'C' team as hosts got proceedings underway throwing the first jack but were overtaken by another new team in a Rastrick 'B' side looking to make their mark at this level. The meeting of the other two new teams was the highest-scoring match of the day with 113 points racked up as Brockholes beat the Springwood 'B' team 61-52, a win that put Brcokholes on top of the first league table of the season.
Last year the B teams from Milnsbridge and Huddersfield Recreation Club played half-a-season each in the inaugural season of the Winter League due to COVID interference and so ironically they started this season by facing each other. The Recreation Club coming out on top for a positive start to their 2021-22 campaign. Although Dalton and Lowerhouses 'B' both played in the League last season they were based on different greens so this was a first encounter with Lowerhouses coming out on top on this occasion.
Lindley BC 'B' had a bye last Monday but will be itching to start their season next Monday when, hopefully, the weather will be as kind as it was on opening day.
