Year 2003: The BCGBA Finances under scrutiny

A financial report may not be everyone's idea of fun spending a couple of hours sifting through the figures but they can tell you a lot about how well, or not, an organistaion is run. This report on the BCGBA funding for 2002-3 shows a dip into reserves to acquire £20,000 to balance the books. Not everyone has a £20,000 reserve fund to dip into. The Finance Officer's report may have painted a picture of a financial struggle with a £7,400 loss on the year but with over £200,000 left in five bank accounts they were hardly struggling to make ends meet. It prompts the question why did they need so much money in reserve?

Some leagues judge themselves on how successful they are by how much money they have in their bank accounts. It seems that some regard their sole purpose for living is to get funds from leagues, clubs and bowlers to swell their bottom line. I am not saying that the BCGBA did that in 2003 but I just wonder what targets they set themselves, then and now, to judge how successful an organisation they are.
