BOWLS | Wilson remains in winning vein

Graeme Wilson continues to be the man to beat in crown green bowls, the Elland WMC player collecting another string of titles in 2004 including a third Yorkshire Merit crown when defeating David Walker 21-10 at Newsome, Huddersfield. Wilson also became the first person to win the Bill Carter Memorial event at Akroydon Victoria, one of Calderdale’s top individual tournaments, for a second time. The birthday boy had an easy success over Mick Robinson in the final.


There were team triumphs for Halifax in the Yorkshire Inter- District League and Calderdale in the over 60s Federation of Crown Green Bowls competition while Crossroads retained their Halifax League title in style by seeing off nearest rivals Lanctan in the last two rounds of fixtures. s But the picture is not all rosy with local officials Mel Gilbert and Keith Hatzer warning that more needed to be done to encourage youngsters to take up the sport. A furore greeted the news that a £lO levy was to be imposed on all clubs in the Crown Green Bowling
